Movie review: First Man

First Man

Damien Chazelle (2018)

I was enchanted by La La Land, Ryan Gosling is one of my favorite actors, space travel is an existential obsessions of mine. So naturally I was very optimistic. Was I right?

First man focuses on a few years of the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong, leading up to him being the first human being on the Moon.

The Good: Intense scenes in space, beautiful shots of the moon, an intimate look at Neil’s Armstrong character, another great Gosling performance, a great re-creation of the 1960’s

The Bad: A bit too much focus on Neil, the really intimate approach sometimes obstruct the immense scale of what was actually happening

My opinion: it is a good movie, a lot of moments will give you chills, and the character-study of Neil Armstrong can be quite emotional and impactful. But I think I was expecting too much, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t love it. Rookie mistake.

I can’t really say if the movie has weak points, or it’s me that’s not totally receptive to the angle Damien Chazelle chose to tell this story. But I would recommend it for sure.
